Botulinum Injections

The earliest indicators of aging often manifest as wrinkles around the eyes, lips, forehead, and neck. While wrinkles are a natural part of the human face, many individuals perceive them as adding years and fatigue to their appearance. This procedure caters to both men and women, aiding in the smoothing of frown lines, forehead creases, “crow’s feet” and addressing excessive sweating.

Mimetic wrinkles stem from the movements of facial muscles when smiling, laughing, or squinting. Over time, these wrinkles deepen and become more pronounced. Botulinum toxin type A offers a solution to reduce the visibility of these wrinkles.

Botulinum is a naturally occurring neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When injected into specific muscles, it blocks nerve signals, allowing the targeted muscles to relax. Consequently, unwanted wrinkles gradually diminish. By carefully selecting the muscles to target, only those responsible for wrinkles are affected, preserving a natural facial expression.

Procedure overview:

  • Prior to the procedure, a consultation with the doctor is essential to discuss your objectives and medical history (including allergies, illnesses, and medications).
  • If desired, a numbing cream may be applied by the doctor before administering the botulinum injection.
  • Botulinum is then injected into specific muscles using fine needles, the quantity of injections dependent on individual facial characteristics and the severity of wrinkles.
  • The procedure typically lasts 15-30 minutes. Muscle relaxation is usually noticeable around 3 days post-injection, with visible reduction in wrinkles appearing after 1-2 weeks.
  • The effects of botulinum last for 3-6 months. It is advisable to undergo the procedure twice a year to prevent further wrinkle deepening and excessive mimicking.

Post-procedure guidelines:

  • Maintain cleanliness at the injected areas.
  • Avoid rubbing or touching the injected areas.
  • Refrain from applying makeup for 12 hours post-injection.
  • Abstain from alcohol consumption for 24 hours.
  • Sauna visits on the same day are not recommended.
  • Avoid lymphatic massage and chemical peels for one week following the procedure.
  • For two weeks post-procedure, apply SPF 50 sun protection cream regularly.

Contraindications:

  • Not suitable for pregnant and lactating women.
  • Individuals under 18 require written parental consent.
  • Contraindicated in the presence of active herpes.
  • Not recommended for those with muscle disorders or skin issues near the injection site.

While botulinum toxin has been a staple in medicine for decades, unfounded fears and misconceptions persist due to misinformation. It’s crucial to understand that professionally administered botulinum toxin injections yield a rejuvenated appearance with natural results. Importantly, botulinum toxin merely relaxes muscles in the treated area, preserving facial expressions.

To ensure safety, botulinum toxin is meticulously administered in minimal doses by a licensed medical professional registered with the Health Board.
