Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation – a modern, safe and medication-free depression treatment

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a scientifically proven treatment method used primarily to alleviate symptoms of depression. The procedure is performed with a small medical device that delivers a very weak and completely safe electrical current to the brain. The stimulation affects the areas of the brain responsible for regulating mood, emotions, and cognitive processes.

How does the treatment work?

• Two electrodes are placed on the scalp to deliver a weak direct current to the brain.
• The stimulation lasts 30 minutes; the entire procedure takes approximately 45 minutes.
• The patient remains awake during the procedure and may read, talk, or engage in simple activities.
• tDCS is not painful – a light itching, tingling, or pricking sensation may be felt under the electrodes, but it quickly subsides.

Safety

tDCS is a non-invasive and medication-free treatment method that has been studied for decades. It is considered very safe, and no serious side effects have been reported. Treatment initiation and monitoring are always carried out under the supervision of a trained specialist.

Treatment course and results

• A typical treatment course consists of 10–15 sessions, or more if needed.
• A daily active-treatment protocol often includes around 20 sessions (the exact plan is created by a psychiatrist, family doctor, or psychologist).
• Most patients experience improvement within three weeks.
• After completing the treatment course, the specialist evaluates the effectiveness and discusses the further treatment plan with the patient.

Who is tDCS suitable for?

In Europe, tDCS is officially approved for use in:
• treating depression
• relieving chronic pain
• managing tinnitus

Research also shows that tDCS may help improve attention and reduce impulsivity in ADHD.

Why choose tDCS?

The advantages of tDCS include its safety, non-invasiveness, lack of medication, and relatively fast effect. For best results, it is important to undergo the sessions consistently, as the therapeutic effect develops through repeated stimulation. tDCS also combines well with other treatment methods, potentially enhancing overall effectiveness.
